YA Book Carnival GIVEAWAY: Series Summer Celebration!

Lauren of Shooting Stars Mag had this fantastic idea to host a YA Book Carnival! Check out her post for more detail. This whole week of June 21-27, you can enter contests featuring YA lit-related prizes. So why WOULDN'T you check it out?

I am celebrating YA Book Carnival and the start of my self-determined Series Summer 2009 with a giveaway of ALL SIX (6) of the books in Meg Cabot's Mediator series. If you haven't read this series yet, I'm not sure where you've been. It tells the story of Susannah Simon, who gets into a whole lot of trouble because she can see ghosts... and there's one hot ghost in particular that she can't seem to see enough of. This is great fun serial paranormal reading the way only Meg Cabot can do it, and I highly recommend you check it out.

To enter this giveaway, I need your help. What is Series Summer 2009, you ask? With my TBR shelves threatening to take over my entire room, I've decided to enlist your help in helping me choose what to read every season. For Summer 2009 I will be reading books in series. They may be the first book in the series, the last (which I haven't gotten around to yet), old, new... everything goes, as long as they are part of the series!

Enter by telling me which books from the lists below you think I should read. Nudge or recommend as many books as you want; you can give up to one point per book, but you can also give half- and quarter-points to other books you think I should read but not as immediately as the full-point books.

  9. I LOVE this series! And I've only read three of them. :-)

+1 I follow you on bloglines

Here's my two cents. Under no circumstances should you pass up Dealing with Dragons. That book has been one of my all-time favorites since like 5th grade. They are really quick reads. I also highly recommend Into the Wild by Sarah Beth Durst.

I'm assuming you've read that first one since The Grand Tour / Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevermer is the second in the series. But I really like anythig Wrede does. I just got the third one myself; I'm super excited to read it.

I just finished reading the third book that start with Dead is the New Black / Marlene Perez. It was okay, light and fun, but not anything to rave about. However, I haven't read the first two, just the third one.

The Hatter M book (I assume it's the graphic novel one?) is less confusing if you've read the other Looking Glass Wars books first. Even though chronologically it takes place before the other two, the novels do a much better job of helping you understand Hatter's character.

I had a hard time getting into The Perilous Gard / Elizabeth Pope but it was an interesting book in the end. It's a different take on the whole "Tam Lin" type tale. I partly enjoyed it because it was set in Tudor England, although that doesn't make that big of a differnce in the setting. But the character of her sister ANNOYED me!

Anyway, that's my two cents. Hope you get good advice on what to read!

Beth Fish Reads is doing a Sookie Stackhouse Challenge, so you could read that book with them (I'll probably join, but I'm still holding out to see if I like the first book).

I've got Fire on my ARC-alanche pile, so you could read that with me :-)

OH! MARKED! read that! I read it a month or so ago. Total brain candy, but such a cool escape. I've got the second book Betrayed on my desk and the third Chosen is in the mail. AND they have a really cool website you can visit, get "your mark" and just in general have fun at. Read MARKED! :-D

  20. You want recommendations, you got them! First off, I'm already a follower, this'll be posted in my sidebar and in my Sunday Contest Slurry next week (just missed this week's). And you're already on my blogroll.

As for the recommendations . . . I'd have to go with Fire, avoid Foundling unless you're into word-building heavy and relatively plotless stories, Lament (that's one I'm reading now, Dead Until Dark (can't go wrong with Sookie Stackhouse), Marked looks decent, avoid Society of S if you know what's good for you (see my review for it, I think I gave it one bite, Foundling as well but I rated that one a little higher), The Vampire Diaries as they can't be considered "classics", You Are So Undead to Me looks cute, The Devouring, definitely and Maximum Ride looks pretty good.

  23. Well, out of all of those books, I've only read one of them. But I would recommend Flowers in the Attic. It was one of the first more "adult" book that I ever read as a kid, and is a classic (if you like books about truly dysfunctional families, that is!) Also read Maximum Overdrive, only because I also have it sitting on my shelf waiting for me.

I've got Marked and The Vampire Diaries in my bookshelf, but I haven't read them yet. I do think you should read them though, as I've read only praise for them:)

  54. Hmm. Well, first of all, thank you for the contest!
    I follow your blog.
    Now, for the books!

-I wholeheartedly recommend Ironside (assuming you've read Tithe, and, to a lesser extent, Valiant).

-Vampire Academy is a very fun read. It's no great literature, but then, all books don't have to be. So I guess I'll give this half a point.

-The Blue Sword is a very nice read. I read it awhile ago, but I remember enjoying it very much.

-Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty is a light, cute read. I give it half a point.

-The Amber Spyglass is amazing, just like the other books in the series. READ IT!

And, um, I can't really believe this, but I haven't read any of the other books on the list. *hangs head in shame*

Well... hope this helped! Thanks again for the contest!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I have hardly read any of these, but I'll tell you what ones I want to read also:
    - Vampire Academy
    - Wings
    - Dead is the new Black
    - Marked (I've read this series so far, its really brilliant)
    - Your so UnDead to Me
    - Evernight (This looked really interesting by the blurb)
    - Night World 1 (seems interesting)
    - Mates, Dates Series

Unfortunately I've not read or heard of that many, but thats my insight. I'm really into vampire books but the Mates, Dates series looked funny as well.

  87. Wow - that is a long list and I haven't read many of them myself although there are ones I'd certainly like to read.

    I'm following you.

I think you should read "The Amber Spyglass" - I really enjoyed that entire series.

Of course, "Flowers in the Attic" is certainly not a work of literary genius but I have to admit that I read that entire series in highschool so you must give it a go!

  101. Jeez! I'm so late in the game. x3

I'm starting to realize I'm a big fan of supernatural stories so...I'd say DEFINETELY start with Vampire Academy by Michelle Read. IT IS PERFECT. No lie. ♥

Evernight is pretty good too. Dead until Dark is actually quite well-written and should be read! I don't know what to say about Flowers in the Attic.... I read one V.C. Andrews book. Those books scar you! *shiver shiver* Then continue with the Vampire Diaries! Those seem really good (and the WB series is coming soon!)

Okay... I'm followin' ya. I'm adding you to my blog roll AND I'm putting you in my list for contests. Check my site when you can! :)

  108. I think you should read:

    Maximum Ride / James Patterson
    Skin Hunger / Kathleen Duey
    Dragonsong / Anne McCaffrey

If you read Flowers in the Attic, just go ahead and read that whole first series. That was back when VC Andrews wrote them and they were decent but no matter how much you may like the book, do NOT rent the movie.
