Waiting on Wednesday (50)

My Ridiculous, Romantic Obsessions by Becca Wilhite

Sarah Howard's first year at the university is everything and nothing she expected, especially when a very cute boy named Ben in her Art History class starts to show interest in her.

Sarah feels like she's an average, normal, everyday girl. So, when Ben (to whom she secretly refers as Adonis because she thinks he could be a Greek god) begins to take interest in her, Sarah is in denial. For one thing, last year she was deeply crushed and humiliated by Jesse James, a guy who she thought liked her. She's determined not to get burned again.

But in her heart of hearts, what Sarah really wants is a Jane Austen kind of romance. Ridiculous, right? That kind of romance doesn t exist anymore . . . or does it? Sarah is smart and fun to be around and even pretty, despite her Medusa-like red curls. She even plays the guitar. (So does Ben!) Yes, Sarah is everything Ben has wanted. He's crazy for her, but Sarah is just not getting it. She's playing hard to get, and if she s not careful, she s going to lose a real hot gentleman -- her 21st-century Mr. Darcy. [summary slightly modified from Goodreads]

At less than 200 pages, it's a short book, but DAYUM does that summary contain a lot of potential. It's really hard to get such a well-used and predictable plot to be fresh, but the book has been rated well on Goodreads, so I have good hopes for it. And yeah, if this turns out good, it'll be REAL GOOD. A 21st-century Mr. Darcy? I want one.

My Ridiculous, Romantic Obsessions will be published in paperback by Shadow Mountain on March 3, 2010.

What are YOU waiting for this Wednesday?

  5. Oh this one is definitely going on my list.

...Steph, do I sense that you are possibly the same religion I am if you know about Shadow Mountain?

  6. Love the title. And then I saw Jane Austen and knew I had to read this book.

Right? I said the exact same thing when I finished reading the summary. This is going in my TBR pile. Nice pick!

  8. I'm hesitant, as I always am when people try to incorporate modern day with any Jane Austen work, but the cover and title really drew me in. I can't wait until tomorrow when the goodreads winner is announced.

  9. Well, now I'm waiting for this! It looks really cool - I love Austen (including Austen adaptations), and this sounds a bit like Psych Major Syndrome by Alicia Thompson which I enjoyed. I wish there were more first years of college stories out there!

Plus, the title reminds me a bit of that line from Moulin Rouge about his 'ridiculous obsession with love' - and that's one of my favorite movies.

  13. Since I'm a major Austen fan (even though that's not really my main era of interest, which is the Depression years), I enjoyed the references to Mr. Darcy!

So sad that Austen died so young.
