Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky
Maddie lives in a world where everything is done on the computer. Whether it’s to go to school or on a date, people don’t venture out of their home. There’s really no need. For the most part, Maddie’s okay with the solitary, digital life—until she meets Justin. Justin likes being with people. He enjoys the physical closeness of face-to-face interactions. People aren’t meant to be alone, he tells her.
Suddenly, Maddie feels something awakening inside her—a feeling that maybe there is a different, better way to live. But with society and her parents telling her otherwise, Maddie is going to have to learn to stand up for herself if she wants to change the path her life is taking.
In this not-so-brave new world, two young people struggle to carve out their own space. [summary from Goodreads]
I can totally see this potentially being our future, which is rather tragic, in my opinion. I've heard some good things about this book, so I'm interested to see if it lives up to my expectations!
Awaken will be published in hardcover from Houghton Mifflin on May 23, 2011.
Divergent by Veronica Roth
In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris, and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together, they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes-fascinating, sometimes-exasperating boy fits into the life she’s chosen.
But Tris also has a secret: one she’s kept hidden from everyone, because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly-perfect society, she also learns that her secret might be what helps her save those she loves . . . or it might be what destroys her. I was initially a bit wary of Divergent. I mean, the premise is so ambitious! There's a lot of room for error and disappointment. However, I keep on hearing praise for this debut novel, so now I'm definitely curious and want to see for myself what this book is like!
Divergent will be published in hardcover from Katherine Tegen Books on May 3, 2011.

Dystopia FTW! I'm interested in both of these too. The summary for Awaken kind of reminds me of MT Anderson's novel Feed, although it looks like a completely different type of story in other ways. Nice picks.
ReplyDeleteGreat picks! Awaken, apparently, is on NetGalley, but I haven't signed onto that yet. I've been meaning to! Divergent is also one I am waiting on. You are right- it sounds extremely ambitious!
ReplyDeleteAre you going to the Richelle Mead signing in Doylestown tonight? I am going to try to make it.
