Gahhh, how do I even begin to find all the series I keep meaning to read? *digs into LibraryThing and Goodreads*
1. Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott
2. Dreamhunter Duet by Elizabeth Knox
3. Savvy and Scumble by Ingrid Law
4. Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier
5. Darkangel Trilogy by Meredith Ann Pierce
6. Beka Cooper series by Tamora Pierce
7. Discworld series by Terry Pratchett
8. The Chronicles of Elantra by Michelle Sagara
9. Arthurian Sequence / The Lion Hunters by Elizabeth Wein
10. The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede
So, got any opinions? Recommendations? Pushes? Warnings? Advice?
I've always wanted to read the Patricia Wrede series. I was surprised to find it was not listed in 1001 Children's Books You Must Read. I'm a Reading Rebel so I may read them anyway.
ReplyDeleteHere's my list of Top Ten Series I'd Like to Read.
Ooh, Reading Rebel... I like! I've always been fascinated with how people compile a list of "must-read children's books," what gets left out and what gets included.
DeleteI am with you on the Arthurian Sequence / The Lion Hunters series - I managed to track a copies of them down for peanuts so I really have no excuse.
ReplyDeleteMe neither! Unfortunately my copies are back in the States so I won't have access to them until May. Perhaps we could do a read-a-long then, if we both need that extra motivation to get over our "no excuse"?
DeleteI haven't read any of these, but they look great! Great list :)
ReplyDeleteHere's my Top Ten!
I'm throwing in a vote for The Enchanted Forest Chronicles! I read it as a teen and adored it. I still do.
ReplyDelete(Although some readers believe that the 4th book might be better read first, since it was published before the others.)
Oh, I didn't know that! Hmm, curious. What do you think? Which order did you read them in?
DeleteI loved the Enchanted Forest books as a younger teen, but found them REALLY young when I did a re-read a couple of years ago. But they are fun and quick. I loved Wildwood Dancing and wish the series (companion novels, really) could have continued past two books!
ReplyDeletePratchett's Discworld series is very much worth starting. The Tiffany Aching books are my favorites so far, and they can be read as a series of four unto themselves. I've also read the first two books - Color of Magic and Light Fantastic - which are funny but not quite as good as Tiffany. The fourth book, Mort, is also a great part of the series. Loved it and its humor. :)
ReplyDeletePratchett is a great read if you want something very comedic that shows intelligence in the comedy. He loves pointing out ridiculous fantasy tropes and tearing them apart.
John, thanks for your input on the Discworld series! I have this habit of needing to start with the very first book in a very long series, but I could be willing to make an exception, especially since I have no experience with Pratchett (though I do have Nation in my room back in the States somewhere...).
DeleteThe Wildwood cover looks so beautiful! I have the Arthurian Sequence series on my wishlist too. So many books to read...
ReplyDeleteIndeed! Every time I make one of these lists or see others' lists I always say I'm going to get around to the books on my list sometime in the following year. Let's see if that actually happens in 2013...
DeleteThe Enchanted Forest Chronicles are so much fun! If you're a fan of light, comedic fantasy and larger-than-life characters then you'll probably enjoy that series :)
ReplyDeleteI do occasionally find that stuff delightful. :)
DeleteSavvy is awesome.
ReplyDeleteYou've reminded me to try Scumble.
I really need to read Beka Cooper as well! I haven't had a chance to tackle it yet (after the first one anyway), and that seriously should be remedied because I love Tamora Pierce.
ReplyDeleteDon't feel too bad--because I've only read one of the Alanna books, and I think that's actually the only Tamora Pierce book I've read. Ever. What happened in my childhood??
DeleteI desperately need to get around to Wildwood Dancing and Beka Cooper myself! I read The Winter Prince and was rather conflicted over my thoughts on it. It's a strange novel, to be sure, so I'm curious to see what you make of it. Good luck reading all these books soon!(:
ReplyDeleteStarted reading The Winter Prince a bit the last time I was in the States, but I couldn't finish it in time before I left. I remember thinking the beginning was WEIRD, and hoping that the weirdness would grow on me soon. Let's see if it does this spring!
DeleteI've been meaning to read Savvy for so long! I've borrowed it twice from the library, but I simply have not gotten to it. My friends all loved it, so I'm thinking I should get to that quick.
ReplyDelete#2, 3, 6 & 7 are all series I've been meaning to read, too - and I ADORE your #1 and #10! Ah, my childhood, right there in those books. There's never enough time to read, is there? Hope you love all of these!
ReplyDeleteI actually haven't heard of any of these series, but now you have me off to Goodreads to see what these are all about as a few of those covers caught my eye and they look exciting.
ReplyDeleteI've heard good things about Tamora Pierce, but I've never actually read one of her books.
