Today is my birthday but it really didn't feel like it because:
- It drizzled. Rain makes me sleepy and cranky and want to stay inside all day, but I had to go to class.
- I have a ten-page essay due tomorrow that is going poorly.
- My English professor wrote stuff on my mid-term essays that made me cry and feel like an unworthy English student, and now I'm worried I might not be accepted into my major.
- I am not celebrating at all. (Paper due tomorrow, remember?)
This is bad bad BAD because I like being happy. I remember Taylor nominating me for a blog award and saying how I simply "exude happiness" all the time, which made me smile because I absolutely love making people smile and laugh. It's one of the best things about life, the ability to say or do something that makes a person pull his or her mouth up at the corners and the light turn on in their eyes.
So! If you could kindly help me with something that makes me happy. I love quotes. I have a cute little notebook that I've kept since middle school, where I write all my favorite quotes. They're across the spectrum--funny, sad, life-changing, a small whisper of a thought. I'm constantly in search for the next quote that can make me pause life for a minute to think about it. I'll share with you one of my favorites:
"Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?" - Anne of Green GablesOh, how I love Anne Shirley. She and her wonderfully unique quirks and quotes can pick up my mood anytime! If you would like, please do share some of your favorite quotes with me, so that I may be able to write them down for posterity in my quotes book. There won't be a reward for doing so, but when work stops taking over my life (i.e. next Tuesday) I will be really excited to get my blog rolling even more with giveaways, author interviews, and the like. Thanks, guys! :)
Some pursue happiness - others create it.
ReplyDeleteAnne Shirley - "Next to trying and winning, the best thing is trying and failing."
ReplyDeleteAnnie - The sun'll come out Tomorrow, so you gotta hang on till tomorrow. Come what may. Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I love ya, Tomorrow. You're only a day away.
Bailey from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (movie version): Hey, it's me, Bailey. You don't have to use this in your movie or anything, although now that I think of it, fainting in Wallman's does kind of qualify me as a loser. But then again, wearing a price sticker on your forehead probably makes you one, too. Ya know, I don't know, Tibby, maybe the truth is there's a little bit of loser in all of us, ya know? Being happy isn't having everything in your life be perfect. Maybe it's about stringing together all the little things like wearing these pants or getting to a new level of Dragon's Lair - making those count for more than the bad stuff. Maybe we just get through it... and that's all we can ask for.
carmen alexis: Smile. :)
"A home without books is like a body without a soul." Marcus Tullius Cicero
ReplyDeleteI don't know if this will really help but I love this quote. I am so sorry that a person you knew died and that your birthday isn't going well. :(
-Senfaye
P.S. I am going to try and think of more to tell you!
Aww, I'm sorry! I have many crappy days like that.
ReplyDeleteI love quotes too, but I find a hard time finding them.
In my yearbook last year, us seniors put a quote next to our senior pics. Mine was:
"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live."
It's not really cheerful, but I think it's a good quote. :]
That one was by Dumbledore, btw. lol
ReplyDeleteI just found this one:
"So many books, so little time."
— Frank Zappa
I thought it was a good one!
Of course I have to do Shakespeare (with double points of awesome for Gene Wilder saying it in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory...)
ReplyDeleteHow far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world.
I love quotes too! I will email you some soon. In the mean time, I suggest you go to thenicestthings. It always cheers me up when I am feeling blue. Maybe it will do the same for you?
ReplyDeletehttp://community.livejournal.com/thenicestthings/
I don't have any great quotes but I know what cheers me up, new books. I'm going to the strand tomorrow and hopefully I will find some books on your yaswap list. :)
ReplyDeleteI've been working on your birthday post since Monday and I didn't get it finished, so I feel like I'm only contributing to your lousy feeling. :( Sorry.
ReplyDeleteI'm not posting quotes here because I will add them in to the birthday post...
hmm, no quotes at the moment but DITTO SHARON :)
ReplyDeletestephanie
Oh, I hope you feel better! I dug out my old quotes list just for you...and I'm afraid that I might have gone a little overboard :} Hope you like some of them! :)
ReplyDeleteLook to this day!
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence:
The bliss of growth
The glory of action
The splendor of beauty,
For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision,
But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day!
Such is the salutation to the dawn.
-The Salutation to the Dawn-
Were it not for yesterday, tomorrow would have no meaning.
Someone once told me that life is all about taking risks. I now realize that life is really about deciding which risks are worth taking.
We're all a little weird. And life's a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible to ours, we join up with them and fall into a mutually satisfying weirdness and call it love, true love.
Desire what you can achieve, and fulfill yourself. Desire what you can never achieve, and you will have a purpose.
Avoid strangers by introducing yourself.
To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.
-Oscar Wilde-
I have to admit that I fell in love twice. First was with you, and second, second was with the person you became when you were already mine.
When faced with a difficult task, pass it on to a lazy person and he'll figure out an easier way to accomplish it.
Many things will catch your eye, but few with catch your heart. Pursue these.
You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel as if you've lost a friend.
I just want to say Happy Birthday! I'm sorry it's been kinda lame!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry about your classmate. I had to experience a few of those myself. They are not fun nor are they easy.
Perk up! Hugs!
Happy Birthday! I understand being too busy to celebrate, I had one of those birthdays last year but my friends more than made up for it this year and hopefully this time next year you will be saying the same thing. I am sorry to hear your friend passed away and unfortunately I understand that one too and the best thing you can do is be appreciative of all the blessings you do have. Here is the quote that got me through the passing of one of my good friends
ReplyDeletef I ever leave this world alive
I'll thank for all the things you did in my life
If I ever leave this world alive
I'll come back down and sit beside your
feet tonight
Wherever I am you'll always be
More than just a memory
If I ever leave this world alive
it is a Flogging Molly song that was played at my friends funeral. hope it helps :)
Here is my own quote:
ReplyDeleteYou rock! You can handle it all! Your blog is awesome and you have lots of people who like you.
*Virtual birthday cakes and hugs*
Happy birthday!
I'm sorry you've been having a bad week. One of my favorite quotes is one I just read a few days ago.
ReplyDelete"I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship." Louisa May Alcott
I hope things get better soon.
Ick, here's hoping things look up! Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteAlright, this calls for some effort-smacking. I went and dug up my quote notebook. :)
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
- A Dream Within A Dream - Edgar Allan Poe
Love took up the harp of Life, and smote on all the chords with might;
Smote the chord of Self, that, trembling, passed in music out of sight.
- Locksley Hall - Alfred Tennyson
Up anchor! Up anchor!
Set sail and away!
The ventures of dreamland
Are thine for a day.
- Dreamland - Silas Weir Mitchell
and lastly, I have no idea where this is from but it's obviously NOT Stevenson's :D
"Bother," said Pooh, as the darkness engulfed him - for he knew that he would kill again.
- The Jekyll of Pooh - R. L. Stevenson
Sorry to hear you didn't have a good week. I hope you cheer up soon.

"A happy life consists not in the absence, but in the mastery of hardships." - Helen Keller
Happy birthday once again<3
I've had birthdays like that. You always think your birthday is supposed to be so magical, not mundane.
ReplyDeleteI have a few quotes about friendship for you!
"Old friends are always best, unless you can find a new one that's fit to make an old one out of." - Sarah Orne Jewett

Though our neighbors are all barbarians,
And you, you are a thousand miles away,
There are always two cups on my table."

ReplyDelete~Mildred Newman

ReplyDelete~Zona Gale
"I want to get you excited about who you are, what you are, what you have, and what can still be for you. I want to inspire you to see that you can go far beyond where you are right now."
ReplyDelete~Virginia Satir
Steph, know that this too shall pass. Loss is difficult and it should be. And living is both sad and joyous. Neither lasts forever.
Even on birthdays like this one, there is joy. All you had to do was ask the love poured out to you.
Be well,
susan
How odd that I posted quotes yesterday and you asked for some! Cheer up, I feel some of your pain (I'm also not essay free until Tuesday).
ReplyDeleteYou're one of my favourite people here on the internet, your blog rocks, and I hope everything's ok. And Happy Birthday for yesterday, even if it didn't feel like much of one xx
(I love your laziness person quote Epic Rat! In fact I'm going to write it down.
Happy Birthday! Here is a quote from "The Truth About Forever" by Sarah Dessen:
ReplyDelete"That was the thing. You just never knew. Forever was so many different things. It was always changing, it was what everything was really all about. It was twenty minutes, or a hundred years, or just this instant, or any instant I wished would just last and last. But there was only one truth about forever that really mattered and that was this: it was happening. Right then, as I ran into the bright sunlight, and every moment afterwards. Look, there. Now. Now. Now.
I don't have any quotes, but I love Anne too!:) I just thought I'd say "don't worry, be happy" (which I guess is a quote, so that works, right?:)
ReplyDeletesomething to do:
ReplyDelete"Fishing in a bucket. The total hopelessness of the activity was very soothing. It was the perfect sport. Without the emotional stresses of success and failure, she was entirely free to enjoy the pleasures of the moment... It was
a good hobby, and cheap, and if more people did it more often..." — Hilary McKay (The Exiles)
so true:
"We do not have to visit a madhouse to find disordered minds; our planet is the mental institution of the universe." — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
and just great quotes from a wonderful person:
"Capital Letters Were Always The Best Way Of Dealing With Things You Didn't Have A Good Answer To." — Douglas Adams
"Well, I mean, yes idealism, yes the dignity of pure research, yes the pursuit of truth in all its forms, but there comes a point I'm afraid where you begin to suspect that the entire multidimensional infinity of the Universe is almost certainly being run by a bunch of maniacs. And if it comes to a choice between spending yet another ten million years finding that out, and on the other hand just taking the money and running, then I for one could do with the exercise." — Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
and the best :) :
"It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes."
— Douglas Adams
hope you are feeling better and happy norooz
Happy (belated) Birthday Steph! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry, Steph! I hope things pick up and get better. Happy birthday! Remember spring will be here soon though it may not seem so yet.

I hope your week gets better! Everyone has down periods and it always seems that everything comes crashing down during that time and piles on top of itself. It'll get better. I swear. Here are some of my favorite quotes.
