I'm doing the Banned Books Reading Challenge!
I'm signing up for the Banned Books Reading Challenge! (Obviously.) You can read more about it and sign up here. This is my main sign-up post, where I will link to my posted reviews of banned books, as well as any other relevant posts I will make between September 1, 2010 and October 15, 2010.
My goal is to read at least 7 banned or challenged books, mostly ones from my own TBR collection, so that I may be finally able to get to these posts, some of which I've wanted to get around to for a while:
The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman
Crank by Ellen Hopkins
Lessons from a Dead Girl by Jo Knowles
Feed by M. T. Anderson
Hero by Perry Moore
Shade's Children by Garth Nix
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud
Blood Promise and Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead
Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko
Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You by Peter Cameron
Can't wait to start reading some of these!

Some awesome books on there! Loved Shade's Children, totally creepy, it's the reason I can't read a lot of YA scifi - I want them to be as good! Hero, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Feed, ahhhh. Going crazy. You're gonna love them.
ReplyDeleteI've read The Handmaid's Tale (you'll like it if you enjoy dystopian lit) and Al Capone Does My Shirts. I think it's middle grade but it's still an awesome book. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThe Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian is my all-time favorite book! And I just finished Feed which was great as well! Enjoy these reads!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking at that and i'm trying to figure out why some of those books are banned.
ReplyDeleteLolita's a great one!
ReplyDeleteYou picked such great books! Crank was just hypnotic--I couldn't get it out of my head. Feed actually frightened me, considering the parallels to the world right now. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is heartbreaking and hilarious. Lolita had the most beautiful language and Humbert Humbert is a potent combination of charm and charisma.
ReplyDeleteYou are going to have a wonderful ride. :D
Oh! I'll be eagerly awaiting your thoughts on The Amulet of Samarkand if you get to it! It's one of my favourite novels and I'd love to know what you thought of it :D
ReplyDeleteYou should add MARCELO IN THE REAL WORLD and BORDER CROSSING to your list. I have reviews of them on my blog if you want to learn more about them. :) Great challenge.
ReplyDeleteLisa ~ YA Literature Lover
Great list! If I could only recommend one of the books on your list, it would be The Handmaid's Tale!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Lessons from a dead girl and Crank.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realise they were banned books, interesting.
The Amulet of Samarkand is a banned book? That's one of my favorites. Can't wait to see what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteSeriously! It's so ridiculous it makes me laugh. I don't know how anyone can take the ban seriously (but that's why I stay in multicultural, major metropolitans)
ReplyDeleteReally nice to meet you through Beth Revis' blog!
Sounds like fun! These are all new books to me, so I'll look forward to your reviews. I'm sure my wishlist will explode. :)
ReplyDeleteI've only read two of those. The Amber Spyglass is very good. I read Flowers for Algernon in seventh grade, but I remember liking it well enough. I don't understand why it's challenged.
ReplyDeleteI just read Al Capone Does My Shirts- it's excellent. definitely unique- give it a shot!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great list! I read The Handmaid's Tale the summer I graduated from college -- it is excellent. And my son loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid. (I had no idea it had been banned or challenged. Seems pretty innocuous to me. Huh.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sponsoring this challenge. I'm looking forward to it.
