Waiting on Wednesday (109)

Variant by Robison Wells
Benson Fisher thought a scholarship to Maxfield Academy would be the ticket out of his dead-end life.

He was wrong.

Now he’s trapped in a school that’s surrounded by a razor-wire fence. A school where video cameras monitor his every move. Where there are no adults. Where the kids have split into groups in order to survive.

Where breaking the rules equals death.

But when Benson stumbles upon the school’s real secret, he realizes that playing by the rules could spell a fate worse than death, and that escape—his only real hope for survival—may be impossible. [summary from Goodreads]
I have only the vaguest idea of the what this story is going to be about from its summary, but... whoa. Is it paranormal? Thriller? Mystery? A combination of them all? I want to know!

Variant will be published in hardcover from HarperTeen on October 1, 2011.

  1. I was wondering what genre it was too and agree it does sounds good. Adding it to the list! My WoW pick this week is more on the magical AU fantasy side.

  8. Hey! I'm so glad you're excited about the book!

As for the question of genre, it's being marketed as dystopia. While it definitely has dystopian overtones, I think it's more accurate to call it a... thriller? It's modern-day, with just a hint of sci-fi.

Does that help? I'm being pretty vague because I'm hiding spoilers. :)

  9. I believe that this books shows some obstacles that author and coach Vera Jones touches on and more in her motivational book "
